Hedging and Screening

Hedging & Screening

Hedges are used to create outdoor rooms, to block off the sun, to create a windbreak, to screen an unattractive view or to create a living wall. Creating a thick hedge or screen acts like a fence, keeping things in and keping others out. Remember plants can be selected for hedging that have coloured foliage, scented to non scented flowers, edible fruit and berries, and bird attracting.

Here are some factors to take into consideration when planning to grow a hedge or screen:

  • How tall would you like the hedge or screen
  • What width do you want to achieve eg is the hedge behind a garden bed or along a drive way
  • What is your soil type – heavy clay to sand, quality of drainage
  • Will it be full sun or shade
  • You will need to feed your hedge- water, fertilisers and mulch
  • Ensure you have the right tools and products to maintain the hedge or screen
